White is never white

Perhaps my favourite thing is working out how to recreate the living colour that you find in flowers. The colours that you find in my artwork don’t just come out of a tube.

They come from recreating that living colour with layer upon layer of transparent oil paint. Just as you once built photographs from layers of different colour film, I separate these layers in my imagination.

The magical luminous chartreuse colour you find in the centre of Clarity for example is underpainted in gold, then Indian yellow, then Naples Yellow and French Ultramarine and then white. Each layer taking a week to dry.

All of this creates a special work of art to find a place in your heart.
